History

On a cloudy and fateful morning of 30 April,2020 , Indian residents of Maputo woke up to learn about the kidnapping of one their own loving sons, an established entrepreneur and a philanthropist, who touched the hearts of many vulnerable Mozambicans.

While signature campaigns and lobbying the local government and the High Commission of India were being launched , these few stalwarts decided to create a grassroots movement through social media by reaching out to as many Indians as their contact list provided.

Soon, there was an outpouring of support expressing genuine concern about the safety and security of the Indian diaspora , who made their homes in their lovely adopted country of idyllic Mozambique.

A WhatsApp group was officially launched and within weeks the number of registrants grew exponentially.

An official petition with over 100 signatures was sent to the Office of the Prime Minister of India.

With the support of Internal Security and PMO , the abductee was rescued and released unharmed.

This was a momentous occasion ,when it was felt by these brave Indians that as a Group, they can make a difference working as a cohesive Group in other areas of interest and concern for the economic, social, cultural and spiritual upliftment to enhance the quality of life.

Over the next few weeks, the Group leaders met informally to engage in mobilising support for stranded Indians due to the pandemic and assisting in combating the virus.

The membership at large demanded more support in different areas expressing a strong desire to organise a Group embracing all Indians under an umbrella body incorporating all the diverse associations ,while retaining their individuality and ethos.

Hence was the birth of Indian Association of Mozambique , fondly called I AM on 23 June, 2020.
